Skilled Trades, A.A.S. (STAND)
The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Skilled Trades (STAND - Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Nontraditional Degree) is a statewide program involving various colleges within the West Virginia Higher Education system and the West Virginia Building and Construction Trades Council/AFL-CIO. Minimum / Maximum of 60 credit hours.
This degree is negotiated between an organization and the college. This is not a degree that students may enroll in without being employed by a participating organization.

State Approved Curriculum Guide
- Component I: General Education – 15 credit hours minimum
- Communication Skills (6 credit hours):
- Writing & Rhetoric course (3 credit hours) - Technical or Professional Writing recommended
- Human Communication & Interaction course (3 credit hours) - Interpersonal or Intergroup Communication recommended
- Quantitative Skills/Laboratory Science experience (6 credit hours):
- Quantitative Reasoning course (3 credit hours) - Technical, Professional or Industrial Mathematics recommended
- Scientific Inquiry course (3-4 credit hours) - A Physical Science course with associated laboratory section recommended
- General Education Elective (3 credit hours)
- General Education course (3 credit hours) OR any general education elective special topics class that may be created especially for the STAND program (3 credit hours)
- Communication Skills (6 credit hours):
- Component II: Technical Core/Occupational Specialty – 40 credit hours
- Classroom Instruction in the Occupation: 450-750 classroom/laboratory contact hours of occupational education
converted to credit hours at the standard ratio of 15:1 (classroom) or 30:1 (laboratory)
- Classroom Instruction in the Occupation: 450-750 classroom/laboratory contact hours of occupational education
- Component III: On-The-Job Training – 5 credit hours
- Trades Council apprenticeship program consisting of at least 1,000 on-the-job training hours converted to credit hours at the standard ratio of 200:1, yielding 5 credit hours total
