An introduction to the basic concepts of science and scientific methods and the essentials of physics and chemistry. Topics covered include forces, motion, energy, heat, electricity, magnetism, light, atomic structure, chemical bonding, chemical equations, and chemical applications. Scientific data collection and analysis will be stressed in the laboratory portion of the course. (3 lecture)

Fundamental concepts of geology, meteorology, and astronomy. Earth processes, both past and present, will be studied. Topics covered will include the origin of the Universe, solar system and earth; the structure and composition of the earth; plate tectonics; the atmosphere, weather and climate; earth's water resources, and the Earth's place in the Universe. Earth resources and environmental topics will be stressed in the course, rocks and minerals and topographic maps will be studied, and there will be a local geologic field trip. (3 lecture)
